Hulk vs. Red Hulk is a failed set. Why? My reaction to Hulk vs. Red Hulk…
Well, let’s start off with the good stuff first!
GLORIOUS minifigs galore! Hulk, while different from previous incarnations, still looks good (pink pants! 😛 ). She-Hulk, Red Hulk and Red She-Hulk are brand new to LEGO, and all are very satisfying figures. I’m glad LEGO chose to make them!
You also get a couple of nice parts. This part in dark green, at the time of writing, only appears in this set, and you get 3 of it. Hulk’s ride’s wheels only appear in purple in this set (at the time of the writing). The dark red stud shooters only appear elsewhere in Rey’s Speeder, and this scoop piece only comes elsewhere in the StarScavenger. Part 6143426 comes in just 3 other sets, as does this wheel piece.
But… that’s about where all the good stuff end.
Check out the builds.
How the heck are these builds suppose to relate to the Hulk theme? That’s one of the biggest flaws with the set: the builds are completely unrelated to the included characters. As far as I know, Hulk and Red Hulk have never used such vehicles before (do correct me if I’m wrong). Understandably it would be hard to make vehicles for two characters who mainly go around on foot and smash stuff, but I think a large playset with crumbling sections would suit the Hulk theme better than these two vehicles.
Another problem with the set: everyone’s least favorite play feature, the stud shooters. Kids I know don’t like stud shooters as the bits get lost so easily, and AFOLs definitely don’t need such gimmicks (especially since it’s annoying to go look for the pieces, but if you don’t you’ll step on them). There are a total of 6 stud shooters and 1 rapid stud shooter, which means you can fire 12 studs without reloading! Good luck finding all those 1×1 round plates…
Lastly, the main play feature of the set, the “crashing” feature, doesn’t even work properly! See how it works (or doesn’t work) in JANGBRiCKS’ review here:
All in all, Hulk vs. Red Hulk is a failed set. The figures are great, but the builds suck. The price of £54.99, $59.99 USD, and $109.99 NZD is bad for what you get, and you’re better off buying the equally-priced TLBM Batmobile or the cheaper Milano vs. the Abilisk. I don’t recommend this set. Maybe just bricklink the minifigures.
Personal Rating: 2/5
