Caught the LEGO Technic Bug!

The 2017 LEGO Technic sets have made me catch the Technic bug! I’ve fallen in love with the theme now.

I may review some of them if I get them. Let me know which one you want me to review in a comment below!

But today, I’m going to take a quick look at all the released winter 2017 LEGO Technic sets.

42057 Ultralight Helicopter: $19.99 USD/£14.99 UK/$29.99 NZD/$29.99 AU

Ultralight Helicopter (really a gyrocopter) looks… interesting. There are a lot of stickers. The pumping piston engine is cool, but I’m not a fan of how the landing gear doesn’t drive the propellers. In the US it’s the same price as the Stunt Truck and Stunt Bike, which makes it pretty weak. In Australia it’s pretty expensive too, but I find the UK and New Zealand prices rather reasonable.
First Impressions Rating: 2.5/5

42058 Stunt Bike: $19.99 USD/£17.99 UK/$34.99 NZD/$32.99 AU

The stunt bike has a nice cool menacing stance. However, it’s much smaller than 42059 Stunt Truck, despite being the same price. In addition, the other side of the bike has an ugly gear drive train, which fattens the bike significantly and hurts the look really bad.
First Impressions Rating: 2.5/5

42059 Stunt Truck: $19.99 USD/£17.99 UK/$34.99 NZD/$32.99 AU

This set is definitely better than the Stunt Bike. It has a nice aggressive stance, is much bigger, and a cool color to boot! I really like the color blend and I feel this looks like a great set for the price.
First Impressions Rating: 4/5

42060 Roadwork Crew: $29.99 USD/£19.99 UK/$39.99 NZD/$39.99 AU

The vehicles themselves aren’t anything crazy awesome, but I like the realistic orange colors and the set is pretty decent sized for its UK and NZ prices. The play features (truck steering and dumping back) is nice as well, while the bulldozer isn’t too shabby. Plus the B-model actually looks good!
First Impressions Rating: 4/5

42061 Telehandler: $39.99 USD/£24.99 UK/$59.99 NZD/$49.99 AU

The Telehandler is a nice model. I like the steering and the main function works okay. However it’s quite a bit pricey (except in the UK) and the use of the worm gear makes the boom function very slow.
First Impressions Rating: 3.5/5

42062 Container Yard: ??? USD/£54.99 UK/$99.99 NZD/$89.99 AU

I actually really like this set! The reach stacker looks nice and has a cool locking function. The truck actually looks pretty cool too! In addition, the B-model is really cool as well.
First Impressions Rating: 4/5

42063 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure: $59.99 USD/£54.99 UK/$99.99 NZD/$89.99 AU

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure (such a mouthful) is an… average motorcycle. I’m not a huge motorcycle fan, and the Container Yard has better value imo. Of course if you like BMWs then this is a good set, but it’s just not my cup of tea. In addition, there are quite a few inaccuracies.
First Impressions Rating: 3/5

42065 RC Tracked Racer: ??? USD/£74.99 UK/$149.99 NZD/$119.99 AU

I like the colors of this set. In addition, the overall model looks rather good. However, the Power Functions elements really increase the price, making the final model rather small in comparison to the price. I like this set, but the high price hurts it.
First Impressions Rating: 3/5

42064 Ocean Explorer: ??? USD/£74.99 UK/$199.99 NZD/$169.99 AU

For some reason, this set is the same price as the RC Tracked Racer in the UK but is a whole lot more expensive in Australia and New Zealand. I rather like this model, I think it has a decent price (a great one in the UK) and a decent B-model, but there are some minor problems with it.
First Impressions Rating: 4/5

42066 Air Race Jet: $159.99 USD/£109.99 UK/$269.99 NZD/$219.99 AU

The Power Functions in this set are definitely cool! I love that VTOL function and the landing gear isn’t too bad either. However, the jet looks rather stubby and I feel for the price, additional features could have been included. The price isn’t too great either.
First Impressions Rating: 3.5/5

Thanks for reading this! What set should I review? Let me know in a comment below! 🙂

  1. Don’t really own any technic sets, however I too am warming up to the theme after I modified a technic car to be able to be driven by a remote!
As for review ideas, maybe the container yard, roadwork crew or the jet?
Cheers, keep up the good work.
