Hi everyone! I know I haven’t reviewed a set in a while (edit: actually only for two days), so today I am reviewing 70904 Clayface Splat Attack!
This is a 2017 LEGO Batman Movie set that contains 448 pieces and retailed for £29.99 in the UK, $34.99 in the US, $49.99 in Australia, and $59.99 in New Zealand.
Only two minifigures are included in the set. I feel that not many will buy this set solely for the figures.
The first minifigure is Batman himself. He’s almost in every LEGO Batman Movie set. This version has a happy smile on one side and an angry one on the other. He comes with two batarangs. If you are buying the set for Batman, you might as well buy a smaller set like 70900 Joker’s Balloon Escape (though that has a different head) or 70901 Mr. Freeze Ice Attack (same head). But let’s be real: who will buy this set just for Batman?
The second minifigure in the set is Mayor McCaskill, who is not-at-all inspired by today’s politicians (pantsuits? hmmm. dark orangey skin and light yellow hair? hmmm.) She was not in the movie for too long, only 1) as a disguise for Batman and 2) giving a speech at Commissioner Gordon’s retirement party. She comes with a walkie talkie, and has a reversible head. She’s a simple minifigure, but gets the job done. Whoops, was that a political slogan?I feel two minifigures included in a set of this size is a little low. Fortunately, one is exclusive and the build in the set is actually a third character! 🙂
But before we move on to Clayface himself, there’s one very small sidebuild to look at first.
There’s a little “clay trap” type of build: it pretends it’s a bunch of clay and you can stick someone inside to pretend they’re trapped by the clay. The ‘damsel in distress’ in the set is the Mayor herself, walkie-talkie and all. Batman will have to save her (with his 9-pack? hehe). It’s a simple build but works decently I guess.
The main build is the eponymous Clayface himself. This guy was a pretty fun build, and I like the way they used round plates to achieve a gooey look. Also worth noting is that the color used for him is actually rare, meaning that many parts are made for the first time in this set! He has two forearms with inbuilt rapid stud shooters, which fire out little gooey clay studs. However, the set comes with an extra forearm — a clay hammer! I like the versatility created by this forearm as Clayface often shapeshifts.
Here’s Clayface with his new hammer hand. It looks good and I welcome the variation. Another thing I like is his poseability. His limbs are mounted on regular ball joints, his legs are on click joints, and his head is on a Mixel ball joint. As you can see, this allows Clayface to take on many awesome positions!
I also love all the exposed studs on the body, allowing you to stick minifigures as if they are stuck to Clayface’s body!
One last thing I love is that you can swap his printed (yes, there are no stickers in the set) eyes around and make him look sad while Batman triumphantly… stands on his head. Clayface is a very expressive build, which I love!
In conclusion, this is a very well done set. Clayface is an awesome, super expressive build, the price is great, and it’s just a really great set. The only gripe I have with it is the minifigure selection… that’s not so great. I would’ve liked to see maybe another villain/main character. Someone like Commissioner Gordon or BARBARAAAAA would fit well here. Still, the Mayor is a welcome inclusion and the figure selection can’t spoil the overall quality. I think this is my favorite $60 NZD LEGO Batman Movie set. 🙂
Personal Rating: 4.5/5
A great set that I highly recommend! 😀 But what do you think? Be sure to let me know in a comment below! Oh, and do suggest what sets you want me to review, I’m open to suggestions 😉
